Dancers of all ages welcome! We clear the decks to make space in our jewel-box dining room for couples to twirl and fox trot to the swinginest swing band around. Notable dancers from every corner of the Eugene ballroom community will descend on our dance floor for this lively evening. And speaking of lively, Denise Steele’s Lindy Hop Dancers will put on quite a show. This is the Lindy Hop as it was meant to be done. Bring a partner or come alone and enjoy the show, dance, and refreshments. There’s room for everyone.
Swing has enjoyed a return to the dance
scene in a big way since its introduction in the aptly named Roaring Twenties.
The more athletic forms, such as the West African-inspired Lindy Hop, have
become all the rage among the high school crowd. Gentler forms with exotic names
like the Charleston, the Shag, and the Balboa are just plain fun for those of us
who would rather not become airborne.
Arthur Murray trained dance instructor
and exhibition dancer Laura Taylor has been teaching Swing, among many other
forms of dance, for twenty-eight years. She currently teaches weekly at the
University of Oregon Ballroom Dance Club, Eugene’s beating heart of the ballroom
community.
In 1913, Harry Fox introduced the dance
that was destined to become the most popular dance of the Twentieth Century. The
fox trot, after many musical and stylistic changes, was wholeheartedly adopted
by even the Hollywood stars. This is your chance to learn the fine details
before the Blue Moon dance and concert on April 2nd. Instructor Laura Taylor
will make this an exciting and pleasant social evening—and she’s bringing in
some very special surprise guests to make that happen. Everyone from the
community with an interest in dance is welcome to attend. If you’re an expert,
we’ll really be happy to see you.
Wondering about proper ballroom attire?
Worried about the details of ballroom etiquette? Take this final opportunity to
socialize, polish your dance technique, and ask questions of ballroom dance
expert and blue-ribbon competition winner Laura Taylor. The big bash with Blue
Moon is just a week away! Members of the community are welcome—with or without a
partner.
Join film historian Lon Davis for an evening celebrating silent movies.
You’ll see clips from a dozen silent films and hear behind-the-scenes stories
about the legends of early Hollywood. |
