YOUR SENIOR LIVING QUESTIONS ANSWERED:

No matter where you choose to live, this information can help you make an informed decision.

Assisted Living
Assisted Living

Assisted living is a group of services that provide a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care, mostly to disabled folks and seniors. Designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence, it represents the perfect balance between making life easier for seniors while giving them the right amount of autonomy and freedom.

Based on three decades of experience in the field, we at Willamette Oaks divide these services and places into two categories

  1. Communities that support independent living, and
  2. Communities that have the added support of on-site medical staff

The majority of seniors who are used to living active and independent lives do not require constant assistance nor medical care. What they really desire is independent living with the added benefit of features that maintain and promote their autonomy and wellness. Such features usually include daily meals, housekeeping, fitness programs, group activities, transportation, communication, and access to medical services

Think about it - why should you do tedious things all on your own when you’ve worked all your life to enjoy retirement? You deserve to spend time on things that you’ve always wanted to do but never got to.

This is usually the core principle of an independent care senior community. Communities that support onsite medical assistance tend to fall under the category of nursing homes.

Willamette Oaks Offers Many Types Of Assistance To Its Residents

Willamette Oaks, the #1 choice for assisted living Corvallis Oregon citizens can get, prides itself on offering a wide array of services and benefits to its tenants. Among them is our LifeMinded program for seniors, which motivates participants to stay active and social.

Our restaurants provide huge diverse diet programs while our housekeeping staff makes sure all housing units remain clean and tidy. Some senior residences are designed to accommodate those who are in greater need of medical assistance and help with other everyday tasks. These communities usually include access to licensed nurses, medication assistance, and whole-day observation of health status and are closer to nursing homes. For those with serious health issues or who are in declining health, they’d be best served by this type of residence.

At Willamette Oaks, we specialize in filling the role between independent living and assisted living in an approach that allows seniors to age in place. It’s the best of both worlds, all in one place.

This way, we make sure that as our residents spend more time here and their needs change, they stay satisfied while building and maintaining an independent and active lifestyle.

Different people require different sorts of services, and one size simply doesn’t fit all. We are fully aware of this which is why it’s so crucial to find the right match for our loved ones.

Contact us whenever you have time, and we will help you determine whether what we offer meets your requirements, and ultimately your vision of retirement.

We at Willamette Oaks believe that the level of senior care we offer is the finest available in Oregon, but we want people to live where they will receive the care that’s right for them. Communication is key here, so give us a call and we will work out the details together.

Independent Living
Independent Living

Retirement brings numerous changes to our lives, and while we like to think we’ve prepared for them, putting it into practice usually ends up with us being proven wrong. With lots of free time suddenly available, we tend to pursue our dream of staying independent and continuing to live as we used to so far. The idea of spending the remainder of our life in our homes sounds attractive. But it’s often a dream that starts to fall apart as we get older.

Obligations start to pile up, we forget things and have declining energy as we age, housework and chores suffer, and sooner or later we all are going to need help.

The next thing you know, your legs are shaking as you stand on the ladder and you’re not aware that you are in danger of injury just for doing mundane chores and tasks like swapping a lightbulb. Everyone who’s lived with a senior person knows exactly what we’re talking about. We keep our confidence as we age, but our skills and abilities lose sharpness at a tremendous pace.

Not to mention that what people envision as socializing in retirement usually never plays out as we want, and gradually our lives become even smaller and duller while worries and burdens grow bigger and scarier. Day to day living slowly becomes unbearable.

Fortunately, most seniors nowadays recognize these drawbacks and one of the ways they deal with them is moving into senior communities, often referred to as 55+ communities. Having access to services like ours is what allows you to enjoy the remainder of your retirement without having to worry about trivial daily tasks and exposing yourself to everyday risks and problems.

Independent Senior Communities - an alternative to living alone in Corvallis

An Independent Senior Living Community is a community of active, healthy seniors who are able to live on their own. It may take the form of a neighborhood, apartment complex or a single large building. Independent living is frequently referred to as retirement communities, retirement homes, senior apartments, or senior housing. The key component is that you live in close proximity to one another which allows for a wide array of benefits.

At Willamette Oaks these benefits include amenities that would be very expensive or simply not available to an individual or couple, such as housekeeping, salons, transportation, security, a concierge, fitness center, and large communal rooms.

Additional benefits if you choose to partake include a wide array of planned social activities, fitness and wellness programs, and meal services. Even if you choose not to engage socially, prepare your own meals and spend time out and about by yourself the peace of mind in being part of a larger retirement community is always there.

Aging in place is the new concept of quality retirement

Obviously, the core principle is to make residents as happy as possible while sparing them of the potential burdens that are bound to become a problem over time when living on their own. Willamette Oaks specializes in providing its residents with all the things they require throughout the day, from food and household accessories to social activities, religious services, as well as various entertaining and educational programs.

Our staff is on standby 24 hours per day and residents are encouraged to give feedback and share their thoughts with the management, which makes life easier for both sides. This policy manifests itself in the fact that our staff and residents develop tight, long-lasting relationships and friendships that bring joy to both sides.

With such a recipe for building trust that surpasses the concept of friendship, it’s no wonder that people regularly choose to move from Corvallis to our community.

Nutrition
Nutrition

Managing aging starts at managing your kitchen

It’s tempting to think there’s nothing we can do to influence the way we age. However, science and numerous experiences prove this to be nothing more than a myth. Everyone can greatly slow down their aging and keep their health in check just by focusing on one major, yet often overlooked factor in their lives - nutrition. And it’s not about quantity, but quality.

While there’s no denying that meat such as pork, beef and poultry are good sources of proteins and energy, it should be noted that nowadays they often come with an abundance of additives and saturated fats.

Although sounding trivial, these substances can impede our metabolism and endocrine regulation, causing inflammatory responses and intolerances, and opening the gates for numerous diseases and health problems. And we’re not just talking about physical diseases here. Mental problems and neurodegenerative conditions all get worse from toxins building up in our bodies, and our immune system failing to tackle the buildup of issues.

So what can be done to keep toxins out of our bodies as we age?

The path towards wellness starts in the guts. And our guts largely depend on symbiosis with benevolent bacteria to break down foods and extract the building materials that make up our bodies. But there are some important factors to consider when looking at gut bacteria.

One of the things we can do to promote gut health is eat foods with fiber like fruits and vegetables. We can’t digest fiber but it provides food to the microbiome which in turn feeds us directly. Every diet plan should incorporate them, as not only do they keep gut health in check, they also provide the body with vital amino acids necessary to synthesize vitamins.

The second thing to keep in mind is pH, or acidity. Eating processed foods and simple sugars brings a disbalance to our bodies, and the microbiome is very sensitive to pH changes. Certain acidity levels can promote the growth of other microorganisms which aren’t there to help us but can cause a lot of problems. The point is that diet can make or break our bodies and we never underestimate it, for the sake of all of our residents’ wellbeing.

As for proteins and sources of energy, along with regular meat such as beef and poultry, seafood is considered the best. Free of saturated fats and harmful additives, it is basically all energy and building blocks for our bodies.

Tasty yet healthy dietary programs are what Willamette Oaks excels at

With several decades in the business, we at Willamette Oaks are fully aware of the importance of nutrition for seniors. That’s why we carefully tailor our menus to provide our residents with all the nutrients and energy they need, while still enabling them to enjoy the taste.

Some of the ingredients are grown in our own gardens, and the difference in taste is almost unbelievable. Our whole menu is carefully crafted by skilled chefs. A lot of it takes root in the healthiest diets in the world - the Mediterranean and traditional Japanese cuisines.

Certain Asian and Mediterranean dishes have been proven to boost overall health with their diverse ingredients. Our salad bar offers all sorts of seasonal herbs, fruits and vegetables while our seafood section provides a variety of dishes packed with proteins. All of it prepared in different tasteful combinations, some of them custom arranged thanks to the invaluable feedback and suggestions from our own residents.

Besides being included in monthly rent, the diet plan allows our residents to choose how, where and when they will consume their meals.

Expectedly, sometimes our residents prefer to use our room service, spend their day at home or organize special events within a circle of closest friends. That’s also an option at Willamette Oaks.

Fitness - Body & Mind
Fitness - Body & Mind

As we enter retirement, we tend to forget that our bodies aren’t the same as five or ten years ago. Sure, we may feel alright at first, but that doesn’t mean things will stay that way forever. New challenges begin to appear, and both physical and mental health start to feel the consequences of aging.

Even our sense of time changes as we get older, and it’s tied to brain health, and reduced exposure to novelty. Time starts passing by faster and faster. But the good news is that there is a way to prevent this and make the most of our retirement days.

It has been known for ages that physical exercise boosts physical health. But what the scientific and medical communities these days point out is that physical exercise can have an even greater impact on our mental health and overall happiness. For starters, exercise keeps our bodies in shape by improving our blood circulation, immune system, and metabolism.

Fitness is not just about your body, it’s about protecting and maintaining your mind

Regular physical exercise results in numerous beneficial chain events. A more resilient immune system leads to a higher resistance to heart diseases and Type 2 diabetes, making our metabolism more suited to digest sugar and keep levels of insulin in check.

Cascading further, your metabolism will be more efficient, bringing more energy and nutrients where needed. You will have more energy, thus completing the circle of overall health improvement. But things get even more interesting as we explore how good nutrition and regular physical exercise affect our mental health and mind.

Numerous studies indicate that older adults who have regular physical exercise and live an outgoing life also prolong their lifespans and retain their brain health. It has long been considered that the immune system is there just to deal with detectable pathogens and harmful bacteria, but recent discoveries prove that it has an enormous impact on our brain health as well.

For instance, the immune system regulates the population of benign bacteria residing in our guts that help us break down food and digest nutrients. To make things even more interesting, some of our happiness hormones, such as serotonin, are synthesized in our guts. Then, they are distributed and reabsorbed into our bloodstream through pores in our guts, which then communicate with our brains and let them know that “everything is okay” through a complex network of nerves.

Meaning that in order to become and stay happy and relaxed, our bodies need serotonin. It tells us that we’ve done something good for our bodies. And physical exercise is a key component of this equation.

Even incorporating simple breathing exercises to your daily routine can tremendously change the way your body functions, for the better! Most of us are lacking oxygen anyway, so breathing is an excellent way to get back on the horse if you have low energy day-to-day.

Willows Senior Living Community helps its residents stay fit, healthy and happy

The goal is to start actively protecting our bodies from illnesses and our brains from neurodegenerative and autoimmune disorders. This is exactly what doctors are pointing out when they say “prevention is the best cure”.

At Willows Senior Living Community, we understand the importance of physical fitness and therefore encourage our residents to participate in various events. Besides educating our residents on the activities and techniques vital to maintaining their health, we also motivate them by combining exercise with social activities, so they can learn to love and enjoy exercising.

The concept of LifeMinded

For this purpose, we have developed our own concept LifeMinded, organized into five categories that integrate into one holistic approach.

The first category includes yoga, dancing classes, and walking, all promoting outdoor activities.

The second pillar of our method is brain fitness, leisure time, competitive activities and mental exercise like puzzles, encouraging participants to maintain and use their wits to solve complex problems.

Social connection is our third LifeMinded category and is presented in various social activities, workshops, parties, and live events that we host on a weekly basis in order to encourage our residents to socialize and develop new relationships.

We also believe in making a difference to be the best motivation for all, and therefore implement it in our LifeMinded program. It is designed to show our residents that they still have more than enough time and abilities to develop new skills, discover their passions and make an impact on their community, and the world by funneling their energy into creativity.
