Meet BirgIt, Age 90

“This is my best chapter yet.”

Birgit moved in at 84, a year after her husband died, trading a house she loved for a community she loved even more. A former registered nurse from Denmark, she says that living here is “the icing on the cake.” Her weeks are packed: strength and stretch classes, three-mile-long walks, improv on Mondays, group meditation, lectures from local professors, and evenings at the symphony.

Living with macular degeneration, Birgit even leads a low-vision support group to help her neighbors stay independent and connected. “My social calendar is so full my kids have to make an appointment,” she laughs. “This really is my best chapter.”

Meet Jennifer, Age 87

“My life keeps opening up.”

When Jennifer moved to our community, she feared leaving her old life behind. Instead, she realized that she could bring it with her—and grow a new one too. She still hosts her longtime women’s group every month, gathers her book club in her apartment each Tuesday, and stays active in her church.

At the same time, she’s built a whole new circle of friends who share ideas, happy hours, concerts, lectures, and long conversations. A retired psychiatric nurse practitioner, Jennifer is drawn to people’s stories — and here, every neighbor has one. “I expected convenience,” she says. “What I didn’t expect was feeling held and continuing to grow. Even now, life keeps opening up.”

Meet Ginnie, Age 103

“I’m not a good sit-arounder.”

At 99, Ginnie was still running her three-acre farm when she called her daughter and said, “I think I’m about ready to quit.” Moving to here meant trading the farm for a life she could enjoy instead of manage—without giving up her independence.

Now 103, she starts most weekdays in fitness class, walks the grounds - even in the rain, and hosts pressed-flower card sessions for neighbors. Her daughter lives nearby, and her great-grandsons have each worked in the dining room. She laughs that her biggest challenge is choosing between tai chi and group meditation. Ginnie adds, “I’m not a good sit-arounder.” Here she doesn’t have to be.

Meet Betty, Age 94

“I didn’t lose my independence coming here.”

Betty moved in at 90 after deciding she was done driving, done cleaning gutters, and done managing a house on her own. Her family toured a few places, but the moment she pulled in, she knew: “It felt like home already.”

Independent living, to her, means choice. She cooks most nights, keeps up with her finances, and heads to the dining room when she feels like it. She helped start The Knitwits, a weekly bring-your-own-project group that’s still going strong. She makes items for the gift shop, helped spark a resident-led happy hour, and always checks in on neighbors. Four years in, she says, “I loved living here then. And I still love it now.”

Meet Norm, 86 & Joyce, 80

“We wanted less house. We got more life.

When Norm and Joyce moved here, they were ready to stop fixing fences, clearing fallen trees, and managing nearly two acres of upkeep —without giving up the active life they loved. Their calendar is still full with board meetings, volunteering, and longtime friends living in the area. But life here has expanded too.

Norm is learning the recorder from a former symphony player down the hall. Joyce took a colored-pencil art class and ended up winning recognition for her drawing skills. When two desks wouldn’t fit, Norm designed and built a custom ten-foot shared workspace so they could work side by side, and keep up with their umpteen projects. We were lucky to get on their calendar for this interview! How fortunate we all are that Norm and Joyce now call our community home.

Meet Charlie, 84 & Polly, 77

“We picked this place for the vibe.”

When Charlie and Polly moved in, they expected life to get easier. But they didn’t expect it to get this much better. From the first visit, people were talking, staff knew names and it felt like a place where people actually live.

What they like most is the freedom to do the things that actually matter to them. Charlie started playing pool and a neighbor who loved the game playing with Charlie so much he bought him his own cue. Polly found her people through lectures, conversations and everyday connections. With house upkeep behind them, their days feel lighter. “It’s easy to get involved here,” they say. Nothing is required, but plenty is possible.

Meet Margaret, Age 95

“When you do things at 95, you get a lot more accolades than you ever did.”

When Margaret came to look at Willamette Oaks with her son, he saw the fourth-floor apartment with a view of the Willamette River, and said: "Mom, you can't do any better than this."

This spring, she trained for the Eugene Marathon 5K with neighbors and staff. She, crossed the finish line to hear her name over the loudspeaker and the cheers of the crowd. She placed second in her age division.

Margaret has essential tremor, which makes some things harder, but it doesn’t stop her. When she took up bobbin lace making after moving in, she found that the rhythm demands total attention, so her tremor goes quiet as she works. She loves it so much that she’s making lace bookmarks for her family for Christmas. (Shhh...it’s a secret!)

Meet Carol, age 90

“God's got a plan. I'm home.”

Carol's mother was one of Willamette Oaks' earliest residents. For years, Carol visited daily on her way to her job at JCPenney just around the corner. Later, when her own home became too much to manage, Carol came for dinner to get reacquainted. When she walked into a room with the same layout as her mother's, something settled. She said out loud: God's got a plan. I'm home.

She's now in room 137. Her mom’s exact room.

A bubbly, energetic self-described homebody, Carol is the matriarch of a large, loving family. She stays busy with her 1000-piece puzzle hobby and keeps her sliding glass door open for whichever of her four children, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren might show up to visit. She recently hosted her 75th high school reunion committee for beer and pizza in our own Willamette Hall. And her family doesn't worry about her anymore. At her twin great-granddaughters’ request, she's now shooting for 101.

Meet Claudia, age 83

“This river and view are like a dream come true.”

An avid nature-lover, Claudia spent 40 years in New Mexico. When she came to look at Willamette Oaks seven years ago, the river sealed the deal. She falls asleep to the sound of the rushing water and wakes up early to find the full moon coming through her bedroom window.

Claudia also keeps busy here. She now chairs the garden committee, which has grown from six raised beds to 22. She leads our weekly meditation group, serves on the welcome committee, sits on the board, and hosts the local Native Plant Society meetings here.

"Being part of things," she says. "That's what keeps you sharp. It matters more as you get older."
